Every conductor through which current flows generates a magnetic field, which in turn can induce a current flow in other conductors and influence other magnetic fields. Alternating electromagnetic fields are also used to transmit information, such as in a radio or mobile phone.

Many electrical devices in a confined space can cause the electromagnetic fields to influence each other to such an extent that they can interfere with transmission or reception. In other words, the functionality of electrical devices is no longer guaranteed.
